MacArtney Underwater Technology is a privately owned, global provider of advanced underwater technology, founded in 1978. We design, manufacture, and service products, systems, and complete solutions for sectors such as marine & offshore, ocean science, naval, and offshore wind.
We strive to make things easy for our customers by acting as a one-stop shop — offering both standard products and fully customized solutions. Our core competencies include connectivity and data acquisition, as well as systems designed for demanding underwater environments.
At our headquarters in Hjerting, just north of Esbjerg, we are 160 employees — and globally, we are 500 people across 21 locations worldwide.
How can a new employee make a unique impact on your company from day one?
“First and foremost: listen and ask questions. Don’t be afraid to take responsibility — you’re not alone in it. Be curious!”
– Simon, Global Business Engineer Intern
What are you most proud of when it comes to your company’s work culture?
The sense of unity across departments and the organization as a whole is clearly reflected in the high participation in shared activities. It also boosts work performance, which is evident in both innovation, employee well-being, and bottom-line results.
What advice would you give to students who want to work with you?
“Be yourself from day one — be open, honest, and keep a positive mindset, and things will likely go well.”
– Abdul, Finance Intern
“I’ve really benefited from making the most of having the entire value chain on site. Go out and talk to people instead of just sending emails — meet the people! You can be professional without being overly serious — there’s room for personality at MacArtney, so keep being yourself.”
– Simon, Global Business Engineer Intern
What makes your company an exciting place for students to kickstart their careers?
We offer opportunities for personal, career, and professional development. We strive to retain talented student assistants after they complete their studies, and we foster a positive work environment with a strong focus on work-life balance.
What informal traditions, rituals, or activities do your employees love most?
We have a very active staff association, offering everything from running and walking clubs to padel, golf, and disc golf. We also take part in initiatives like the Step-Counting Campaign, Bike to Work, and of course Football Fridays and the beloved Ugly Christmas Sweater Day. There’s even a women’s birthday club and an eel feast club!
At MacArtney, we’re quite competitive and never miss a good challenge or a chance to enjoy some friendly team spirit!
What’s the least glamorous part of working at your company?
“The ERP system can be a bit tricky to figure out, but I’ve always been able to get help when I needed it.”
– Simon, Global Business Engineer Intern
Naturally, there are also some routine tasks at MacArtney that come with the job. However, these tasks play an important role in supporting the company’s day-to-day operations.
What’s the funniest or most unexpected thing that’s ever happened in the office?
”In the department I’m part of, we do a 2-4 minute plank every day before heading to the cafeteria. The department places a strong emphasis on health but they’re also quite fond of cake, so…”
– Abdul, Finance Intern
“The informal tone was a bit unexpected for me. It’s a relaxed office environment — and that’s definitely a positive.”
– Simon, Global Business Engineer Intern
How do you tackle challenges you meet?
“The onboarding process has been really great. The introduction was very thorough, and we felt that we were taken seriously.”
– Abdul, Finance Intern & Simon, Global Business Engineer Intern
At MacArtney, it’s important to us that our employees are given a solid introduction to the different departments across the company. We also place great value on preparing our teams to welcome students properly — so we can create the best possible learning environment throughout their stay.
If your company could collaborate with any famous person or organization (alive or dead), who would it be and what would you achieve together?
It would be only natural to choose the legendary oceanographer and underwater pioneer Jacques Cousteau. With our technology and his scientific insight, together we could reach new depths in areas such as mapping ocean biodiversity, remote-controlled expeditions, and perhaps even the development of a next-generation ocean laboratory.
That said, we already collaborate closely with researchers today on exciting underwater projects — such as harnessing wave power as an energy source, translating whale communication, and collecting data from neutrinos (ultra-small, electrically neutral particles produced by sources like the sun, supernovae, and nuclear reactors. Neutrinos can travel through entire planets and stars without being stopped, acting as “messengers” from places we otherwise can’t observe).
