Who is BDO?

BDO’s office in Esbjerg is home to around 130 great colleagues, and we’re part of a strong team at BDO Denmark with more than 1,700 employees. We have 34 offices across Denmark and over 111,000 international BDO colleagues in more than 164 countries.

At BDO, we advise both small and large companies on accounting, auditing, and financial consulting. We work every day to fulfill our purpose of being people helping people realize their dreams — both for our clients and our colleagues.

If you’re young and ambitious, BDO is a place where you can grow and develop in a supportive and dynamic environment.

What’s the funniest or most unexpected thing that’s ever happened in the office?

At our Christmas party, our partners served the food wearing “cheeky” aprons — it was a great laugh and showed that no one is too important for a bit of fun!

At one point, management even booked the “Candy Car,” which stopped by for a few hours so all employees could fill up a bag of sweets. These kinds of playful breaks in the workday really make a difference.

What would surprise students the most about working at your company?

Not everything has to be so formal. Even though there’s a hierarchy, it’s a flat one — where everyone is down-to-earth, and your colleagues often become your friends too.

New on the job

How can a new employee make a unique impact on your company from day one?

Be open from the start, and be willing to dive into the unknown with a positive mindset!

Challenge

What’s the least glamorous part of working at your company?

There are many different ways of doing things, and everyone has their own idea of what’s “right.” For example, different expectations can come from different lead auditors.

Some periods are busier than others — especially during spring, which is a particularly hectic time for all employees.

TACKLING

How do you tackle challenges you meet?

If we face challenges, everyone is great at helping each other. But you have to be good at speaking up when something’s difficult and comfortable asking for help — people can’t read your mind.

Everyone has a team leader who’s always ready for a chat if you’re dealing with challenges, whether work-related or personal — so don’t hesitate to reach out!

Career

What makes your company an exciting place for students to kickstart their careers?

There’s a lot of learning in everyday tasks, with a steep learning curve and plenty of responsibility. However, we have highly skilled colleagues who understand that you’re new — they’re great at sharing their knowledge and making sure you feel supported and thrive!

SUCCESES

How do you celebrate successes, big or small, within your company?

There’s a lot of learning in everyday work, with a steep learning curve and a high level of responsibility. But we have incredibly skilled colleagues who understand that you’re new — they’re great at sharing their knowledge and making sure you feel supported and thrive!

Colleagues are also really good at recognizing each other’s successes — for example, when you’ve done a great job. It’s such a good feeling!

The managers are also great at keeping us informed about both big and small wins — like when we bring in an exciting new client, or when we manage to improve something internally by working smarter.

Collaboration

If your company could collaborate with any famous person or organization (alive or dead), who would it be and what would you achieve together?

We believe a collaboration with Rasmus Brohave would be a great fit. He could create a series called “A Day in the Life of an Auditor” and showcase a different side of what it means to be an auditor. This could help break down the stereotype that auditors are really dull!

Best advice

What advice would you give to students who want to work with you?

Be open, curious, and eager to learn! But remember to accept that it can be challenging at times, and you might feel “lost” or unsure, especially in the beginning. We’ve all been there, so don’t be afraid to ask your colleagues for help.

Also, take part in social events — that’s where the friendships and connections begin!

Culture

What are you most proud of when it comes to your company’s work culture?

We are proud to support work-life balance. We challenge the notion that you MUST work overtime and that there’s no room for flexibility — because there definitely is! There has to be space to have a life outside of work.

We also have a strong sense of camaraderie, and we take great pride in the work we do at BDO.

Traditions

What informal traditions, rituals, or activities do your employees love most?

  • We have Friday bars where we can play games and enjoy one or more sodas or beers. Sometimes these even turn into fun nights out on the town!
  • We host youth parties that help us bond and get to know each other better.
  • We go out to watch ice hockey together and organize football and padel tournaments to keep us active and engaged!
  • We also hold women’s events that explore a variety of themes.

Overall, we try to organize something for everyone’s taste!
