The Study Travel Grant was established in 2024 as a tribute to Henrik Uhd Christensen, longtime CEO of Viking Life Saving Equipment, who also served as chairman of Education Esbjerg during the association’s founding and was one of the strongest ambassadors for Esbjerg as a student city. The grant is financially supported by the Claus Sørensen Foundation with backing from Henrik Uhd Christensen’s family.

The purpose of the initiative is to support a student from one of Esbjerg’s six higher education institutions who has ambitions to enhance their skills through a study abroad experience — while also serving as an ambassador for Esbjerg and the educational concept of E.1.

One annual study travel grant of 25,000 DKK will be awarded.

The grant will be awarded for the first time on November 28th during the E.1 Awards, which celebrates talented students from Esbjerg’s six educational institutions.

Who can apply?

The Henrik Uhd Christensen Study Travel Grant can be applied for by enrolled students at the six higher education institutions in Esbjerg who wish to enhance their skills through a study or internship abroad.

It is a prerequisite for receiving the grant that the student is accepted into a higher education program abroad at either the master’s, bachelor’s, or professional academy level, or that the student has entered into an approved internship agreement with a foreign employer.

The stay must, as a general rule, have a duration equivalent to at least one semester — or equivalent, depending on the specific program’s structure, framework, and requirements — and must be credit-bearing in the form of an equivalent number of ECTS credits.

How should the grant be used?

The grant must be used for expenses related to the student’s study or internship abroad.

In selecting the grant recipient, emphasis will be placed on the student having a clear understanding of what knowledge they expect to acquire and how it can be applied in relation to Esbjerg and local businesses. There are no specific academic requirements, but it will be highly valued that the study or internship includes elements of practical relevance and problem-solving in collaboration with businesses or organizations, either locally or internationally.

How to apply?

Students who wish to be considered for the grant and meet the criteria can apply by November 7, 2024.

Your application should include a brief motivation for your stay abroad in light of your education in Esbjerg and your future career. Your application must not exceed 400 words.

Education Esbjerg, which handles the secretarial services, will then evaluate the submitted applications. The recipient of the grant will be announced during the E.1 Awards, which will take place in November.

Documentation

When filling out the application, you must attach the following documents:

  • Confirmation of Enrollment: A confirmation of your enrollment in your education in Esbjerg.
  • Approval from Your Foreign Educational Institution or Internship: A pre-approval is a confirmation from your educational institution that you are approved for a stay abroad. If you have not received your pre-approval, please contact your educational institution and request a confirmation.

Note: If you have not yet received approval for your study or internship abroad but expect to do so, you can still apply without this documentation. In this case, you should mention this in your application and provide the documentation later if you are selected to receive the grant.

Regarding Payment, Taxes, etc.

It is assumed that the student will handle everything related to enrollment and other agreements with the international educational institution and with the educational institution in Esbjerg regarding credit transfer, etc.

  • Payment: We will transfer your grant to your NemKonto once we have received the required documentation.
  • Taxes: Study travel grants are tax-free as long as they are used for expenses related to the student’s study or internship abroad. Therefore, you do not need to report your study travel grant to SKAT.

Education Esbjerg is obligated to report all grant distributions to SKAT, but these are reported as non-taxable grants.

To receive a grant payment, your NemKonto must be linked to a Danish bank account.

You generally should not be eligible for salary/unemployment benefits during the internship. However, you are allowed to receive SU (student financial aid).

Please refer to the guidelines on the SKAT website for more information.
